It's always interesting just liking what you like regardless of era.

It's true. It's nice finding a bunch of influences and then mixing them up to get yourself. I feel the most interesting people can't actually be strictly defined, also the more well rounded people.

Yes! Although it's also nice when the thing you like becomes popular, for one reason. It's easier to find and purchase. *laughs* No more ordering straight from Japan for me. ~_^

hahaha....you must have read my 20-something and Goth post. Ah, are you defending your goth-dom?....I think you're describing something that isn't all together Goth in itself (certainly not the obnoxious commercial cookie-cutter Goth that I spoke of) but a break from the norm....and a willingingness to experiment with something new...a trait that marks the beginning of almost every major movement, particularly in music. And to be fair, the artists of the 60's and 70's who were forefathers of "goth" (the same one's who influence nearly ever modern rock derived genre period) are rarely labeled as such....for good reason. Dating Ed, a man who makes guitars and talks music for hours, we've discussed the finer points of progressive movements in Music, so this could really go on for ages ( ... )

I must say I generally find those conversations distasteful, you know the ones. The ones that try to justify the superiority of an individual based on their music repertoire. Those types of conversations get really old, really quickly. People like whatever music they like for a reason, no one should have to justify that. BUT, if you are going to try to justify it, its probably a good idea to explore and get some facts. Although I must say when ppl try to 'school' me on music (like some of my bf's 'i'm in a band friends)....particularly when its clear they themselves aren't equipped with what I consider a basic understanding, is insulting frankly, but I digress ( ... )

Uh?Yeah....I thought I read that.....To say there wouldn't be Indie, Electronica, or Dance without the "Goth" subculture I think is both exaggerating and simplifying, but you can definitely find examples of Goth's influence in all those genres.

*And its so true....Goths don't like to be called Goths.

Exactly. Labels are easy....but are hardly thorough

I actually don't think its exaggerating at all when you consider the way music happily repeats itself. Also the label issue is something both Goth and "Indie" agree on. Indie culture follows similar clothing styles, at least in California. Many "goth clubs" are not called goth clubs, but alternative clubs where they spin Indie, Goth, Electronica, dance etc. Once you've danced in these clubs and sorts meshed with genres the influence is obvious.

All of those derived from punk, glam rock etc. I mean your own example of Japanese friends and goth are kids who listen to J-Rock which is heavily influenced by Glam Rock and Robert Smith.

On a ridiculous note I can't say Robert Smith without thinking South Park. :)

In the late 80's and early 90's, I called my self Alt, as in alternative.
An alternative to mainstream..
becuase mainstream made me wanna throw up.
In the mid-west there were few that felt that way. Still in the mid-west, I watch my 14 year old daughter bend the current trends. She too loves her black boots and likes to pair them with the short skirts as I did.
It's so hard to force yourself to fit in when you don't subscribe mentally to the politics of the day... and I say, why force yourself to be anything other than what you are.
