Went up to the field with a pretty open mind this evening. I figured I'd see what Staro was like, see how he was responding to me before looking at even attempting to tack up. hiya; hey no problem. All advice welcome!

What you've said reflects the conclusion I've been coming to. One of the reasons I didn't even attempt to tack him up yesterday was that obviously even having me STOOD next to his back was a big deal. So I evidently need to get him completely happy with that before I push to do more.

I have also checked out the possibility of pain as an issue too - he was completely happy for me to poke and prod him pretty hard all over his back and sides and girth area when we got back to the field and I had a grooming brush in my hand. And after the grooming session he made no fuss about me bellying up onto his back. It seems to be an objection to me getting up there and asking him to work that's the thing.

And I think I need to also get better at recognising what's a big deal for HIM - because just 'cos I don't think something is major, doesn't necessarily mean he agrees with me. Or so I'm finding!

Gosh; don't worry about writing an essay. Really useful stuff; and definite food for thought. I had been thinking of hauning him out down the lane again this evening, but maybe I'll take that a little slower, and see if we can do small steps ( ... )
