This was lovely. I've been buying into the "Sam-has-no-soul/a-damaged-soul/a-lost-soul" theory since 6.03 aired (all that "you have no idea how valuable souls are" talk got me thinking) and this is my current personal head-canon. I'm crossing my fingers that Show gives us something half as touching, heartbreaking, and sweet.

"Goodnight, Dean," they chorus, "love you."

"Love you guys," he replies fondly. He also hangs up when they speak again.

"Love you, Sam."

It's silent for a minute. Dean's lost his voice, and Sam's soundless beside him, so he turns to look. Tears are running down his face again, and he's looking right at Dean.

Clearing his throat, Dean manages, "He says he loves you too."

Killed me dead, dear. Killed me dead. Parts of fandom seem to think that Dean can only love Ben n' Lisa or Sam and that Ben n' Lisa can only love Dean and the three of them can only be a family without Sam...but why can't they all love each other and be one big family in their own awesome way ( ... )

I hope that's not what they are doing on the show, but more and more I think this might be it. You certainly did a more than awesome job with this. So sad what happened and what Sam went through, but completely awesome how Dean stood by him. Hugs, Vonnie

Wow! I really enjoyed this! Love the dreamroot to save Sam and your whole theory - nicely done

This was SO good. I like the idea of Dean going into Sam’s hell using dreamroot and actually getting him. Lucifer was chilling and gross, just as he should be. Mostly though, I loved Dean looking after Sam so tenderly and well, including him in his conversation with Lisa, looking after him without a second thought. You handled Sam’s return and the repercussion of his time in Hell amazingly well, physically and emotionally. I expect this is an even more detailed and realistic look at it than canon will provide at the potential trauma of being in hell for over a century.
