Time between seasons 7 and 8:

After the events of season 7, Sam runs into Sarah Blake again (because after six years, I'm still not over it) and they're both damaged and grieving and completely alone, but they're both free too, and pick up somewhere close to where they left off. I know there are a few fics like this out there but apparently I still need more.

Outsider!POV, character study-ish.

One of the orderlies or doctors working the hospital in 7x17 is an old friend of Sam's from Stanford (one of the ones who wasn't a demon).

Gen plz. Bonus points if even through it all, Sam's made some kind of peace with the life he was never going to have, and the friend has difficulty connecting his sanguine-ness about his situation and how much he's changed, with the apparent chaos of a mind in the process of collapsing in on itself.

Double bonus if the friend struggles with deciding whether or not to inform his/her superiors that the patient is *the* Sam Winchester, wanted for all kinds of crazy horrible stuff and recently featured on America's Most Wanted (or whatever).
