Okay, just throwing this out there, 'cause I've never seen anything like it before. Sam finally comes out as gay, but Dean's just too weirded out by it. Entirely gen, because if Dean was harnessing wincesty feelings that would defeat the purpose. His little brother's gay and Dean's wondering how he raised him wrong.
I would love a happy ending, where Dean realizes he loves Sam more than he's homophobic, and he just has to accept a life of going to bars and being Sammy's wingman for dudes.
As far as I'm concerned the more interpretations of this delicious little prompt the better. It just so happens to be a bunny of mine too. The prompt is just too awesome not to share.

"Holy shit, so you’re…” Dean knows he must look like a fish, opening and shutting his mouth, but he can’t bring himself to care that much. Sure he jokes, but he would never in a million years ever have thought…
“I’m queer, Dean, yes,” says Sam with a hint of extra bitchiness. “And I’ve always wanted to see this play. And no, I wasn’t expecting you to come with me.”
“I always come with you,” says Dean, too blindsided to think of anything more relevant to say. Even to dumbass-sounding school-production plays like The Laramie Project. About gay guys beaten to death on fences. Jesus Christ, Sam. I look over and there are tears in your eyes“Jess?” Dean says, and it feels wrong to bring up but it’s the only question among the hundreds buzzing in his head that he can make himself ask

OP here! Sorry for the delay - I loved it. How defiant Sam was, cuz how could he be any other way, and this was my favorite: the fact that he’s now a target of his own subconscious’ protective rage because yeah, that's so Dean. Torn and struggling to keep a brave face and still on Sam's side, no matter what.

:) You're welcome. This was doubleplus fun to write. (The line you cite is one of my particular favorites as well.) My personal view of the situation is that even though Dean does have major issues with insecurity in this area (I agree with Sam that his big-time butchness is certainly a manifestation) he would bury them just like he buries everything else for the sake of the Prime Directive, looking after Sammy even when Sammy goes and tells him something like this.

D'awwwwww!
I love this. So many lines in particular and I can't decide which one I love best! Dean thinking about Sam loving theatre, omg, and Jess...! And poor beleaguered Dean and the subconscious' protective rage! lovelovelovelovelove.
