In terms of diversity... I think the show has some REAL issues with Orientalism.
But one of the main characters is a black man who is a surgeon and they do a pretty good job of telling his story. They aren't afraid to spend some time exploring issues of race in New York City at the turn of the century.
I think they also do a good job of handling sexism. The three main female characters are all pretty great and individualized and given good stories.
AND I WAS A PUDDLE OF TRASH DURING ALGERNON AND CORNELIA'S PHONE CALL. You can just hear the love between them. <3 And Neely getting all involved in investigating Spate's death. The grave digging scene was excellent. LOVE HER SO MUCH. I'm very excited that she's got this storyline and her whole story isn't about her creepy ass father-in-law.
Jfc at how creepy the new doctor was with the prostitutes.
Prayer circle for Algie's retina. That surgery scene made me want to die. NO ME GUSTA THINGS WITH POKING AT EYES. I WOULD HAVE DIED FILMING THAT SCENE. Jfc, get it together Thackery, so you can save Algie's eye.
That creepy Doctor!! At first I thought he would be nice and and care for them... Until he said they could put their legs over his shoulder and all he needed was his noise... No, no sir!
I think the church scene was just establishing Lucy's past (aka she was raised in a Pentecostaly church that believes in speaking in tongues and is charismatic and all that). And maybe then tying it into how that could affect how she might feel about her relationship with John, especially given that he broke it off with her at the end of the episode.
Vintage condescending "White Man's Burden"-style racism, yeah ("even the cray swarthy heathen with their weird pagan witchcraft are blessed by Jesus!").
Didn't watch the latest ep yet but god, Lucy needs to stop with Thack.
Ever since Thack decided it was okay to test his experiment on those Asian women, when they show an Asian person I get a bad taste in my mouth. I really wished there was a Dr. Feng character or something in NYC.

But that almost eye surgery scene? I wasn't prepared.
Each episode really is a masterpiece.

It makes sense. He creeps me out about as much as the creepy Doctor sniffing at the prostitutes vaginas. >.<
