No, that was Sugar Sammy! And btw there was no "outrage". 98% of people got the joke. He knew what he was doing and the one bad reaction to it got blown out of proportion.
yeah that's what I said. That one bad reaction got all the press (granted, it really was a shitty thing to do). It was in no way representative of the general sentiment!
My feelings exactly. I wish it were closer because it's such a great city. Flying in is so fucking expensive, driving is a pain (plus I can't drive so I need someone to drive me), and Amtrak is like 8 hours =(
I'd heard about this but hadn't realized it was about the actor, lol.
I'm not surprised. Francophones can be seriously hostile and holier-than-thou about their language. I don't know about how they've dealt with all immigrant communities, but iirc they were part of a lot of the stuff like religious symbols being banned from use by POC and such.
As much as I'm not here for Tory in a lot of ways, I was really proud he called for an end to carding in Toronto.
just tear down the dumb ass gardiner and stop wasting millions on bullshit projects and figure out a transit plan that will actually work instead of the mess you campaigned on, and we'll talk
they just want to flatten it so it's not elevated in the air, but on street level-- it would save over $100M dollars from the next plan. It's falling apart and won't be structurally sound soon, so they have to do SOMETHING, and fixing it as is is the most expensive option.
it's been all over the news sis, if you're in Toronto you might want to tune in lol
Nope. Staying out of this post as most of you will def show your asses.
I'll just say: he raises very valid points that warrant further discussion, which can (but won't) be done without using the ol' "Québec sucks! They want to make me speak French! As an English-speaker, I'M OPPRESSED!!1!" trope.
seriously. I'd love to have a real adult conversation about language issues in Canada/Quebec, but people always have to show how blissfully ignorant they are, and it gets hostile really fast. There's nothing funnier than an anglo-Canadian whining about how oppressed they are.
This, so much THIS. There is SO MUCH hostility and aggressiveness -even rage- towards Québec and French-speakers is the discourses. It's all just bubbling under the surface, and it comes out whenever the smallest of controversies arises. I recently had a conversation with someone where I said something that started with "Anglos should etc etc" and she responded with "Humm excuse u, I've been given a HARD TIME because I don't speak French, what is this generalization, not all anglos etc" and I could not believe i was seeing the language version of #notallmen being used unironically.

it's a great city to visit for a long weekend, but too far to justify the drive/expense of flying for an impromptu trip.
