I think the biggest issue is that I don't believe any of the actors actually know or like each other.

The US Tony is particularly wooden which sinks the whole show because he's the center. Also they turned it from middle class kids into upper class, and no one wants to see a bunch of over-privileged snots get trashed, mess up in school and face few consequences.

ugh, even though I only saw the first episode of the US version, it makes me confuse some of its characters/storyline with the new UK series.

Off topic but NIELS FUCKING SCHNEIDER in your icon. I never found him to be that attractive until the birthday party dance scene in Les amours imaginaires. Him + Anne Dorval + The Knife = Perfection.
