'I Love You, Phillip Morris' delayed indefinitely
Click to viewI love zany rubber-face Jim Carrey as much as the next Gen Xer, but his subtle, dramatic performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind totally sold me, and I was really looking forward to seeing him as a gay con man who falls in love with his prison cellmate (Ewan McGregor) in I Love You, Phillip Morris, a dark comedy written by Bad Santa screenwriters Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Sadly, despite a splashy debut at Sundance 2009 and the buzz around Carrey’s role, the film is having a hard time seeing the light of day. First bumped from March to late-April, the LA Times now reports that it won’t release at the end of the month after all, and there is no new date set.
What a shame. Carrey and McGregor as a gay Bonnie and Clyde? Gotta see that. Bad Santa duo setting the dark comedic tone and scripting a plot that EW’s Owen Gleiberman, who saw it at Sundance, says “keeps twisting like a Rubik’s Cube”? Yes please. Maybe it’s the gay subject matter (though you’d have to think the movie’s star power cancels that out in this post-Brokeback/Milk era), or maybe it’s money (isn’t it always?), but in any case, looks like we’re gonna have to settle for rewatching the trailer for the time being.
