UPDATE ON NEW CAVILL MOVIE

Mythology-based movies do seem to be on the upswing. Production Weekly reports that Tarsem Singh’s mythological tale "Dawn Of War" (aka “War of the Gods”) has setup offices at La Cité du Cinéma in Montreal.
The director spoke to Empire about the project, being called “War of the Gods” at the time, last January. At the time, he mentioned Henry Cavill as being attached as the lead. No word on whether Cavill is still involved with the project (he is still listed on the films IMDb page, so I say he's still involved. But then again I just want to see him running around naked slaying monsters). In any event, the tidbits that emerged at the time were intriguing:
“It’s turning into, basically, Caravaggio meets ‘Fight Club’…It’s a really hardcore action film done in Renaissance painting style. I want to see how that goes; it’s turned into something really cool. This guy who I really love, who’s the only one person in it right now, is the brother in ‘The Tudors,’ Henry Cavill. I’m going for a very contemporary look on top of that so I’m kind of going with, you know Renaissance time with electricity. So it’s a bit like Baz Luhrman doing ‘Romeo + Juliet’ in Mexico; it’s just taking a particular Greek tale and half contemporising it and telling it."
Not to be a nitpicker, but Caravaggio didn't actually do all that many paintings based on classical mythology. John the Baptist would be another matter. Tarsem's movie apparently deals with the mythic hero, Theseus. According to IMDb, the plot involves:
A purported bastard who retains an allegiance to his mother despite the fact that he longs to join the quest of a king who is battling demons in ancient Greece later embarks on a grail of discovery that has him finding he is the king's son and also fated to become his country's greatest hero as he leads the successful war against long-imprisoned Titans who are hoping to use the demons to restore their power.
Not much has been mentioned publicly about the project since January. It would seem likely that the back to back releases of "Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" and Louis Leterrier's "Clash of the Titans" remake, together with the announced January start of the Marvel comic book adaptation, "Thor," might have helped fast track the apparently stalled project.
Director Tarsem Singh, who is sometimes billed simply as Tarsem, has also directed the fantasy film “The Fall” in 2006, and the science fiction thriller, “The Cell,” which starred Jennifer Lopez and Dylan Baker in 2000. He was also a second unit director on last year’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” He remains probably best known as the director of R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion” video.
A March start is planned.

Whatever, I trust Tarsem Singh. I hope this movie actually gets made, and Henry is still in it. It could be pretty awesome, and I need more Henry Cavill at my local cinema.
