Residents receive frightening phone calls after bizarre movie promotion.
OPP say the prank calls are related to a promotion for the release of the movie 'Saw V'.
A strange movie promotion is causing concern for the OPP after some households received frightening prank phone calls that may be linked to the release of a horror movie.
Police say they have received a number of complaints from citizens in Simcoe County, north of Toronto, who have been getting phone calls related to the release of psychological thriller Saw V.
The promoters have created an interactive website where anyone can enter their name and another person's name to create a "scary" message that can then be dialed to any home phone number.
The message says the following:
"Hello, (your name). Do you want to play a game? You think it's over but the games have just begun. I'm here with your friend, (your friend's name). My work will continue in a way you never saw coming. You won't believe how it ends. Let the game begin."
In the Saw series of movies, the main character takes revenge over society by playing games with people. If they complete the game properly -- they live -- if not, then they die.
Police are cautioning the public and say that if a call is received and you subscribe to caller ID, your home phone number appears as the incoming call.
Right now only residents in Beaton, Aliston, and Angus areas are receiving these calls, but the OPP says they expect more reports of these calls until the movie opens on October 24.
Police say if you receive a call like this, please be aware of the circumstances surrounding the phone call.
