DAVAO CITY, Philippines -- Hollywood actor Josh Hartnett started filming part of the movie "I Come with the Rain" in the gold-mining area of Mt. Diwalwal on Friday, sources said.

A Filipino production staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Hartnett, star of films like "Pearl Harbor" and "Black Hawk Down," arrived in Diwalwal along with other big stars of the film.

"The actor would be here for about seven days to shoot an episode wherein he plays a private detective hired to find a missing wealthy person," the source said.

He said Production 56 and Central Films, a joint local and foreign movie outfit, had more than 100 combined staff and crew for the shooting.

The source said local authorities provided them with at least two Army battalions for the security detail in the Diwalwal, home to about 40,000 families.

Diwalwal is under government control after violence over squabble for gold worsened there about two years ago.

Since gold was discovered in the area in the early 1980s, dozens of people have already died. But authorities could not say exactly how many people died in the mining area since gold was discovered because in most cases, these were not reported to authorities.

The Philippine Daily Inquirer learned that the movie's original location was in Hong Kong but it was director Mario Delos Reyes who convinced Central Films to shoot in Diwalwal.

The source said they will hire about 250 movie extras from Diwalwal.

"Some of the extras include minors," the source said.

He said the daily rate would be four times higher than the offer of P300 fee for extras in the local movie industry.

"This is international so it has higher rate," he said.

Franco Tito, Diwalwal village chief, said the film "would be our chance to prove to the world that Diwalwal is no longer a wild west," he said.

It is the first such undertaking by a foreign movie outfit to film in the area, Tito said.

"There are so many people who want to see the actor," Tito said.

Compostela Valley Governor Arthur Uy told the Inquirer that Hartnett will stay in Diwalwal for seven days.

"As far as I know, it was Representative Manuel Zamora who arranged everything," Uy said.

When Hartnett arrived in Monkayo, he stayed in Zamora's Octagon Farm.

"They stayed overnight and left around dawn for Diwalwal," the source said.

According to the source, Hartnett's advance party arrived in Monkayo and was served "ginataang tilapia (tilapia in coconut milk)."

"But they like the adobo (marinated meat stew) more," he said.

It was not known what Hartnett, a vegetarian ate, but Monkayo is also known as one of Davao region's vegetable-producing areas.

The source further said that Harnett is only one of the main players in the movie.

The others are Elias Koteas and Korean actor Byung-hun Lee.
