Given that James Cameron called it the best film of 2024 and saw it three times... I think it's gonna keep being successful sadly.

I get that Emilia Perez is controversial and polarizing but the reactions are so over the top lmao now I hope it wins best picture.

the film which caused controversy over depictions of Mexicans and cartels.
The list is actually much longer than that LMAO. Mexicans, Mexico itself, cartels, trans people, Audiard not researching anything, Audiard deciding to film the movie in France because he didn't want to spend time in Mexico, the main three cast members not being Mexican, Selena Gomez's poor Spanish and acting... I could go on. Obviously some are worse than others, some are just nitpicks, but it is highly divisive for a reason. I get why Hollywood loves it, but for many of them, it's misguided virtue signaling. If they really wanted to reward a trans film that also took risks, I Saw the TV Glow is right there.
(I do want to say, though, Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofia Gascon were both great and I am fine with them getting nominations. The movie itself and Audiard in particular, not as much.)

i feel like i've seen more criticism of selena's spanish than i have of any of the other, imo much more important issues, you've raised here, so i appreciate this comment. (selena's father is mexican, though btw.)

I know Selena's father is Mexican, but still, even as someone with intermediate Spanish-speaking ability, there were times where her pronunciation just threw me out. I can see to people who don't speak a word of Spanish, though, not having an issue with it. Like the almost entirely French behind-the-scenes list of creatives.

no, i totally understand where you're coming from. i've read people defending her spanish being passable because the character is supposed to be bad at speaking it, but idk if that's true not having seen the film. i was just saying that bc you said none of the leads were mexican.
