Connections and/or parents to support them through education, networking, auditions, etc. Not just for acting though - I know of a now bestselling YA/romantasy author (I won't name names, it's not a rare situation at ALL) with parents who paid for them to survive while they wrote full time, went to conferences, and tried to find an agent for a few years and then hit the jackpot through connections made at their fancy private university. Unpopular opinion, but Hacks is overrated. Take Jean Smart out and the writing is mediocre and not really that funny for a show about a comedian and a comic writer.

To be honest, I didn’t bother with S3 and i barely remember S1 and 2, but I feel like Hannah’s character was supposed to be some kind of comic wunderkind and that was why Jean’s character hired her? I dunno, maybe I’m being unfair - anyone next to Jean is gonna seem less than. She wasn’t terrible in it, she (and the show) were just meh to me.
