i feel like i heard about this movie 200 freaking times the year it came out and i still cannot tell you what it's supposed to be about (not that im asking now) and i feel like that's one of the foundational problems with it. the only real info i got is that it's supposed to be a movie about hollywood (??) and tbh i was not really interested in watching a long ass movie about hollywood kinda getting off to itself, especially not when brad pitt is involved.

edit: and on the tail-end of covid when we were all tired as shit. who would really want to sit down and watch a THREE HOUR movie about hollywood showing off how fake deep they are? we all had bigger problems to deal with and no one was going to drop $20+ at the movie theater to watching something that was not relatable and tedious

It’s a 3 hour long, self indulgent mess. I listened to the podcast, she’s lowkey arrogant in my opinion considering pre Barbie most of her movies flopped at the box office. 51 different accents, really?

I can tolerate long movies for the most part but if I feel compelled to check my watch or I’m sitting there wondering if it’s gonna end, it’s not good. Someone needed to reign Chazelle in and tell him no. This was also a weird movie to release during Christmas, the marketing was bad, who was the audience for this?

I think she probably also has sour grapes because she really thought she was going to get a lot of awards recognition for her performance in that. Apparently she hired a very expensive publicist for the season, and nothing came of it. I think her strengths lie in producing more so than acting.

I remember her approaching Bradley Cooper levels of campaigning but she always gets a pass. She REALLY wanted it that year. Some of her interviews rubbed me the wrong way during that awards seasons as a fair weather fan of hers. I didn’t particularly like her fan girling over that abusive asshole Brad Pitt

Shawshank was a failure? I don’t remember anyone sleeping on that movie when it came out.

Anyway, I barely remember any marketing for Babylon other than hearing it starred an abuser.

Shawshank made 16 million on a 25 million dollar budget. It came out same time as pulp fiction and forest gump so they overshadowed it

Really? I always thought it did better on its initial run. I forgot it was released the same year as Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction.

1994 was an incredible year for movies.

The Shawshank Redemption may not have done well financially, but it was always well-received by critics and audiences, so let's not try to use that classic as a comparison to this ridiculous movie.
