November 20, 2024 at 2:07 PM - Augusta Britt, now 64, has come forward and revealed to Vanity Fair that she and McCarthy began a relationship when she was 16 and he was 42
- They met at a motel pool and she recognized him from the author photo of the book she was reading
- According to her they first had sex when she was 17
- McCathy would go on to become one of the most celebrated living American novelists producing The Border Trilogy, The Road, and Blood Meridian among other works
- Britt was living in a foster home and after being beaten McCarthy convinced her to go to Mexico with him
- He was afraid of being caught and convicted for statutory rape, this never happened
- They eventually moved to El Paso, Texas where she discovered he was married and had a child the same age as her
- In 1981 (when she would have been 20/21) McCarthy won a MacArthur Fellowship, money given without strings to individuals who have made notable contributions in their fields
- He gave some of the money to Britt who used it to visit her family and never returned
- Maintains that she loved him, he was good for her, and she feels like it is a betrayal to talk about him
- McCarthy died last year at 89
source Vanity Fair wrote a gross romanticized view of this so I suggest reading The Guardian for more neutral coverage.
