I don't know... I'd say the movies he made BEFORE "Malcolm X" were worse! "Heart Condition", anyone?!

"Malcolm X" is the kind of movie that made him critically respected and commercially viable, at the same time... Even if the commercial projects were of lesser quality, they still made him more visible... It's better that than being in crappy SMALL movies that hardly anyone saw!

It’s fascinating how he defines a “clunker.” Looking back at his filmography from that era, and I wouldn’t call any of those movies bad. He has very exacting standards, I guess.
