Zoe being the frontrunner for best supporting actress is one of the biggest category frauds in recent memory. She is absolutely the lead, or at minimum the co-lead.

I thought Selena was decent, she and Karla worked well together. The three leads really are the only reason the movie is halfway decent. The writing is so bad.

You commentating on the writing reminds me of this tweet

adding fuel to the fire, here’s an interview for Jacques Audiard, director of EMILIA PÉREZ

INTERVIEWER: How much did you have to study Mexico to be able to make this film?
AUDIARD: No, I didn’t study much. I kinda already knew what I had to understand

Make of that want you will https://t.co/sWkF0KknXt pic.twitter.com/WiwYXkzuiE

Oh god lmao. It is such a jointed movie and a narrative mess. A lot of the criticisms from the trans community are valid, but it’s really just rooted in the terrible writing and characterization of Emilia. Karla makes it watchable, but (hopefully not too spoiler-y) I did not understand why she should get a redemption arc...

The beginning has some really cringy songs and Karla doesn’t even get a good musical moment and she’s the title character.

Yeah I watched the film last night and that was my single biggest complaint. The rest of the movie could kind of be seen as camp but the entire drug cartel storyline was just ridiculous.

[Spoiler (click to open)]I liked the first third of the movie when I thought it was going to be a movie about how Emilia’s character became her true self and made amends with her family and all the people she hurt in the drug cartel. But it all goes downhill after she transitions. Her way of making amends is starting a non-profit?!!! That robs the movie of all its emotional weight because there’s nothing interesting or emotional about starting a non-profit lmao. And if I were a Mexican who lost a loved one to a drug cartel I don’t think I would forgive the drug cartel leader if her way of making amends was just starting a non-profit lmao.

I’ve seen some scenes from their movie and it’s freakin’ hilarious, and I have a feeling it’s not supposed to be.
