When I went to Europe and South Korea I was really taken aback by the amount of younger people I saw smoking, and in Europe especially the complete lack of smoking zones that shit was just everywhere! And then I noticed at the store in South Korea the packs had pictures of like blown out throats on them..must not be too effective. One thing that’s good about America is that it’s pretty easy to avoid the second hand smoke in public now. Crazy to think you used to have to ask for the non smoking section in restaurants

I remember when I went to Europe for the first time and noticing especially in France and Spain that the cuisine of choice tends to be cigarettes and beer. Pork is another option in Spain though haha.

Oh man, when I was in Spain having dinner this woman next to me lit one of those mini cigars and it smelled SO good. I asked her to show me what it was and I bought a pack and fell in love.

By the end of the week, my breakfasts were a coffee and a mini cigar. Thank god I don’t live in Europe because I’d be smoking them every day. The cigars aren’t sold in my country but any time someone goes to Europe, I beg for them to bring me a pack.

"“In the back of every smoker’s mind is the fact that it’s healthy"

Wait, it is?

Maybe he means a denial that it's unhealthy? Like an attitude of, "even if I smoke I won't develop emphysema, I'll be the rare one who doesn't."

I get the comment, but I don't know if I agree. I grew up smoking even though I was fully fucking aware of the scientific data. a lot of people just think they'll beat the odds, will point to family history of smokers they knew who lived to ninety, etc. In my generation (young Gen X-elder millennial) everyone know it was decidedly unhealthy and we called them cancer sticks and Marlboro Red "cowboy killers" and we all KNEW it was shitty. But people either hoped they'd beat the odds or resigned themselves to it. At least among the smokers I knew and I was one of them.

I'm glad he's speaking out about it. I have a neighbor that is a HUGE Lynch fan and used to smoke like a chimney. He's been trying to quit this year and I haven't directly asked why but I also would not be surprised if Lynch being vocal about the damage played a part in the decision.

My das was able to stay sober (alcohol) for 35+ years but he could not quit smoking, and he died from heart and lung disease. Honestly the older I get, the less I can judge him for it, but his death was difficult.
