Best romcom actor and no one today can match him. He was full of clumsy charm. I love "Four Weddings and a Funeral" because of that funeral scene where Matthew reads the poem and I literally just cry like a baby for 10 minutes.
I love "Notting Hill" but I think Julia Roberts was weirdly miscasted. No chemistry between the two. Spike was hilarious and the soundtrack was so good. "Bridget Jones" is one of my fave cosy films.

The only American actress he has had chemistry with is Sandra Bullock, and that’s because her character was similarly sarcastic like him. Four Weddings and Music&Lyrics, his humor and the female protagonists’ were so dissimilar it didn’t translate to chemistry.

I wish him and Sandra would star in something else because their chemistry was sooo cute. I've watched that movie more than once and I still love it so much. He's very charming in romcoms

Such a good one.

Semi-related, but I so distinctly remember going to see this movie with my friend on Valentine's Day. After it was over we were walking down 34th street and some guy was walking toward us holding a comically large amount of red balloons. And without even pausing in talking about the movie I punched the balloons as we walked by. My reasoning at the time was that I thought they were going to hit me so I made the first move. Me and the guy holding them just kept walking like it never happened and my friend almost pissed himself laughing saying that I might as well have shouted "Fuck Valentine's Day!" I miss living in NY sometimes.

I have honestly never found him attractive except in this scene. In my head this is the closest to his real personality he's ever gotten in a movie:

I love this scene. The camera cutting to Colin/Mark's reaction and the sheer longing and jealousy in his face makes this scene more hilarious

Lol I love the scene when they're reading poetry and he goes "oh fuck me I love keats" while smoking and rowing!

This movie is the only time I ever found him hot. Otherwise, he's just charming in a non-hot way.

I enjoy the roles where he's gay or a sleaze or both, so Maurice, Bridget Jones, and A Very English Scandal are among my faves. Also The Gentlemen was a mess, but his tabloid reporter character was the only worthwhile bit.

he was SO GOOD in A Very English Scandal! the most I've ever liked him in a role besides Paddington 2. play more villains, Hugh, lean into it!

Maurice is a very important film for little gay me. I'm so glad I watched that and Firth's ‘Another Country’
