Uk newspaper The Guardian has announced it will no longer post on Twitter/X due to the website's toxicity since Elon Musk took over. They said the negatives outweigh the positives and cite "disturbing content" and the way the site handled the election as its final decision.

I was quite addicted to twitter and finally quit election night. I keep accidentally going to my former page without thinking (I'm logged out though which really helps keep me off) and I noticed my follower account is dropping which means a lot of people are deleting it altogether.

Good riddance. We turned tumblr into a low digit million dollar company, we can do the same for twitter!

There have been multiple mass exodus' since Elon took over (and so many celebs either just silently quit or barely post) but I feel like this latest one is finally taking it's toll. The accumulation of so many people leaving, bluesky finally being the alternative people have coalesced around and it being able to support the influx of users are all good signs.

I think bluesky might soon reach critical mass of enough people moving there that people will be willing to completely abandon twitter.

I wish Bluesky was as active. I have it but I don't do much with it.

im curious of why it would be deemed better. Once it gets big enough, it will no longer be an echo chamber and have the same problems people hate about twitter (even pre-Musk version)

Also - all these companies eventually have to monetise in some way to pay for the enormous bandwidth of millions of users, plus the moderation needed to remove all the hideousness that people insist on posting. Monetisation leads to corruption.

yep.
Its probably why Tumblr wasnt profitable. Very insular with how the feed worked. Unless its changed since i left it.

disturbing content promoted or found on the platform, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism

This is happening on every social media platform. Like, yeah, Elon Musk is a piece of shit and X is a cesspool. But he/it is not an outlier.

The shit heads are never going to keep to themselves, there's always going to be a contingent of them to be dealt with everywhere, but the difference for me is that on my other platforms I have at least been able to curate my feeds so I'm (for the most part) not seeing that shit. It is impossible on Twitter, because the poison is now the platform.

you just have to make sure you stay in the FOLLOWING tab. There may be times where it defaults to FOR YOU.

Or you get suckered into the Search tab and it shows the trending topics.

This is not the answer to the problem (at least not my problem, I guess it depends on any given individual and what they personally want to use the likes of Twitter for). I'm not there to be forced into only having conversations with my small existing network covering my own limited topics, I'm there to engage with/discover people and things I don't know. I want to be in the For You tab. Everywhere else that is possible without being force fed Nazis.

To which there's no answer to be found on the current Twitter, hence why I've peaced out to Bluesky. Which makes me sad, feels like giving up a lot of history and people I had got to know, but I can't keep swimming in that cesspool.

I quit twitter around the 2020 election because I got busy one day and couldn’t check it at all, and when I opened it a day later I had no idea what any of the tweets were about. Even from people I’d been following for a while. The whole ecosystem had just become tweets about tweets and I felt like I had to be constantly engaged to understand any of it.

Have not missed it at all since deleting it!
