I binged all of this during the summer while I had COVID. Kelli and Judy suuuuuck but the show gave me a lot of respect for the dancers. I grew up in Texas/was pretty dismissive of the cheerleaders when I was younger; I had no clue that they have to endure!
I'm glad Charlie is on the team now, she was sweet.
I didn't watch the series that came before, but after watching this show I do feel like it humanized the performers and endeared me to root for them in terms of pay and rights to negotiate. Unfortunately with that large of a pool of people wanting to join I don't know that they have it. I also didn't realize how many events they actually do so that was cool to see. Idk, the coach or whatever was obviously a menace, but it did make me root for the performers.
I never finished watching the show, I thought it was interesting at times, but it had too many episodes and it just got repetitive after a while. I found it too preachy, not just with Reece, but some of the other girls and the whole Texas culture in general. I don't get why any woman would put her body/health at such risk for such little pay-off in the end.
I felt the same way after watching the one about the Navarro squad (Cheer, was that called?). The sacrifices and risks just seem wildly disproportionate to the pay off.
All athletes have a shelf life in terms of their age, and of course not everyone is going to make it pro, but most sports at least have a long term career path that's possible. Cheerleading has little to none. You're done by your mid 20s if not sooner.
