How Colin made Oz a sympathetic character is such a subtle skill. He used his disability, his (occasional) protectiveness of another kid from his hood with a disability, his (demented) love and devotion to his mother, balanced with his cold hearted methods of ending anyone in his way - [Spoiler (click to open)]whether hair-trigger like in the very first scene with Alberto, or calculated yet carefully shrouded in Victor’s last moments leading up to the final scene. He made us feel for him and even root for him in key moments. Multiple times when it looked like he'd met his match or his end, he'd bumble his way through and get away with his life and in one instance not even from his own doing [Spoiler (click to open)](Salvatore mid-battle dying of a heart attack). Oz lurched through everything, and it seemed like fate was always keeping him from falling or failing. I don't know if any other actor - and I include the child actor playing young Oz - could have pulled off this level of complexity with such delicacy. Great news, the rest of the show is not bad at all! I must also sing praises to Cristin Milioti who was just as amazing. Gotham also felt like a real, lived-in place. I'm someone who's usually bored by organized crime fiction and rolls her eyes when crime lords have moral codes a la 'We kill innocent people, sell drugs and traffic people every day, but I do NOT kill children!' or whatever their exception is, but on this show everyone's moral code or lack thereof made perfect sense for that character to me and made them more interesting not less.
