I was dubious about Mackie leading his own film because I felt he was kind of flat at times in TFaTWS, but this looks pretty good & he seems really solid.
I have a little more faith in this movie after the changes they made to "not-Sabra" and especially now that Perlmutter has been 86'd since 2023.
A lot of people are going to complain about this movie being "too political" or too on-the-nose, and I think it might lean that way a bit, but a story involving Sam Wilson!Cap and Isaiah Bradley was bound to touch some nerves regardless. Cautiously optimistic.
Also, I'm kind of surprised they kept the [Spoiler (click to open)]presidential assassination plotline.
i like mackie as an actor but i think marvel has an issue with characters who “graduate” to headliners. anyone who started as a headliner got their intro movie, and as much as people complain about origin stories a) they’re fine if done well and b) they’re a format that gives you a chance to really focus on a character’s basic psychology and core, defining traits. not all of them take advantage of this (hi captain marvel lol), and it’s not impossible to build up a character who started secondary (um….. well i didn’t like black widow as a movie but the problem wasn’t that we didn’t know who natasha was lol). but you walk away from the first cap movie knowing SO clearly who steve is, and i just don’t feel like we’ve had that with sam because his characterization has always been reactive, even in the show that was supposed to be partly about him it’s “how does he respond to the recent things that have happened” and not “who is this guy at his core.”
I actually think we got a decent picture of Captain Marvel in her first movie, and I loved her in The Marvels. I think outside expectations ("omg the strongest Marvel character yet is coming to the MCU!") really set the tone for a lot of people. Also, she was introduced too late in the endgame.
IA with you though, especially re: Black Widow, and I'll cut Marvel just a little bit of slack re: TFaTWS because they were still relatively new to the TV format and a lot of their plans got completely derailed by Covid. I need to do a re-watch soon!
