I always wondered if Brits could tell Americans right away. When I was visiting my friend in Spain, she said they could always tell who was American by the way they dressed.

I've heard that too.
If they're wearing shorts (usually khaki), a baseball cap, sneakers with white socks (but not always), t-shirt (especially one with a graphic on it), or polo shirt, fanny-pack or backpack they're from the United States.
