i got very into minimalism/zero waste/buy nothing a few years ago (at a time that conveniently coincided with me being absolutely broke for months on end) and have never gotten back into the habit of shopping since then. in fact i got so used to the feeling that when i needed an item i had to go on the hunt to find it for free or secondhand, that now i still have to remind myself sometimes that if i need something i can go to a store that sells it and buy one.

for me the thing that wrecks my budget is when i dare to eat food prepared anywhere besides my own kitchen

This is me-I secondhand shop for almost everything, especially clothes, and I'm blown away by how much people shop for just...random shit? Don't even get me started on tiktok hauls, etc...

yeah every now and then i randomly remember that "going shopping" used to be an activity when i was younger. like just going to a store not having anything you need in mind, just seeing what's new and buying stuff just on a whim. like i used to go to the mall at least once a week to browse, now i don't even go to the mall unless there's a specific store there i need.

for a lot of my friends online shopping has made impulse shopping worse but somehow it's had the opposite effect on me. something about the endless online shopping options makes me feel compelled to do a bunch of research and planning before i buy anything. and sometimes that means i just never get around to actually making the purchase!

I don't buy a lot of stuff. My mom is a compulsive buyer and since I was a child I hated how she didn't control herself. I buy clothes once a year and I make sure to buy stuff that's gonna last (I'm a big Patagonia slut and I love that they fix my clothes for free when I need to).

We need to demand companies to recycle and reuse their own stuff. The fact that they are constantly creating new products it's extremely wasteful. I bought a phone in 2017 (Galaxy S8+) and this year I upgraded it (Galaxy S24) and the company wouldn't take my old phone. They told me it was too old. So I gave it to an organization that recycles e-waste, but they are the ones who should be taking care of it.

We need to be conscious of our choices (the amount of trash I've seen people in social media buy is insane) but companies should absolutely be made to reduce waste and if they don't, be handed big BIG fines.

i'm not a huge shopper anymore. i used to buy lots of merch and random toys and gadgets. now i just see it as money i basically spent on waste lol.

i'm trying to be mindful of what and where i spend my money. my vice is basically food, but even grocery shopping makes me wince at the sheer amount of plastic in all items, not just produce and what not. i'm also slowly looking at changing my wardrobe and i want to invest in good quality basics and get more into thrifting.

i use my electronics until they die, knock on wood lol.

getting rid of all my credit cards cured my shopping-as-coping-mechanism right up. debt is one of the worst fucking things in the world.

I buy second hand and you know what. I get much better quality out of it and I have so many unique pieces now. After seeing them sink tanker after tanker in to the ocean full of used clothing I can't in good conscience buy from fast fashion no matter how cheap it is.

yeah I do this with furniture since almost all charity shops refuse to re-sell chipboard/MDF and almost exclusively re-sell solid wood. It lasts so much longer.
