Maybe I'm unfriendly but I don't think not making small talk with someone you're working with is impolite.

Yeah, I agree with what you are saying I also hate small talk so much and I have social anxiety. I still do my best with hairdressers (and have been using the same one fr years now so we're past small talk thank FUCK) because I know some people are silent, which is awkward, and some people dump their entire traumatic life story and that is also fuckig awkward.
