Thomas Tuchel announced as next manager of the England men’s football team

This Daily Mail back page is an absolute disgrace. I know people will say to ignore it and not afford it oxygen but it’s simply embarrassing.

Putting the word “GERMAN” in capital letters; it’s 2024, this sort of utterly backwards bollocks should be well behind us. pic.twitter.com/4mhJ5EOkuB

You’d think the Daily Heil would love this.

The Daily Fail's business model is underpinned by xenophobia, sexism and racism. I don't mean to sound insensitive but I don't understand why this person is surprised.

I don’t think he is surprised really, more that he just wants to make sure and call it out because otherwise ignoring it will just leave people thinking that this kind of attitude represents all English football fans

One of many reasons why a lot of my German American friends try to downplay their ethnicity here.

I don't follow football but hasn't England had coaches from other countries before? Like that "if I speak I am in big trouble" meme guy? What's the big fuss about this one, aside from him being German?

It is solely that he's German. Besides there still being a bit of a football rivalry... sigh, it's so stupid... a good deal of the gammon crowd still lionise WW2 as the last golden British era/sunset of the glory days of Empire. (Yes, take that in, a deadly war which destroyed several of our cities, these people are fucking dumb).

So there's this continual hark back to it that rears its head whenever we have internationals and it's... I don't even have the words for how stupid it is. It's not really about disliking Germans, it's about wanting to remember the last great triumph/moment of relevancy, but it has this stupid backhanded implication that it's oh so shocking we have anything to do with them as our one time foe and and it's stupider with every passing year.

Unfortunately I think the Daily Mail crowd would have been like this about most people who aren’t English (although it is worse because he’s German)
They gave Lee Carsley a hard time because he played for Ireland ffs
And there were a lot of people who would have been outraged if Pochettino had gotten the job because he’s Argentinian

Different countries have different styles of playing the game, so I think part of it is that when England had those managers in the past they didn't mesh well and England performed badly.

Between that and the success of Southgate there's been this desire to invest in local talent like you see other big football countries do. Trouble is while that's worked for the players, there aren't really any great English managers who could take this job on rn.

As long as Tuchel does a good job I don't think people will care in the end.

the players for england deserve success, but the supporters (mostly) do not. also, daily fail stays doing the worst.
