there are at least 5 big active Taylor Swift subreddits on reddit and r/travisandtaylor (not to be confused with r/taylorandtravis) really really hates Taylor and it's getting weird

People can have opinions about any public figure (I mean, look where we are lol) but the moment you need to join a community *solely* devoted to bitching about them like a legit hobby it says more about you than anything else, I fear. And I include myself in that critique because there have been two times in my life I’ve spent a couple weeks looking at and getting serotonin from snark reddits and both times it’s happened because I was miserable and my life was going to shit lmao

this is so real lol the times in my life i’ve been drawn to the most toxic internet content are also the times i personally have been doing worst

also even snark subs/forums whose targets are like genuinely terrible people with many things wrong with them are somehow brimming with misogyny…. like i remember reading one of an influencer on GOMI and it was like “she’s charging crazy money for wack digital products” (normal thing to find annoying) and then “why is this bitch always going on vacation with her friends when they all have husbands?????” like literally god forbid a woman do anything omg….

idk I think it depends on the subreddit. the fundie and Duggars snark communities have legit grievances, as do those critiquing abusive family vloggers who exploit their children for profit, and some have even contributed to demonetizing them or getting them shut down. the 8Passengers sub, for example, was vital in getting more people aware of the crimes of Ruby Franke and her associates.

some subs also chart and critique abusive, predatory people and their shitty actions, especially those with fanbases who are either ignorant or in denial about said actions.

now there ARE definitely also snark subs out there that relish in just hating on a person and being miserable, or targeting an influencer in a pretty over-the-top way, but I just wanted to point this out!

snark subs are legitimately insane, and it sucks that i see a lot of their rhetoric bleed into other places like here, twitter, etc.

being obsessively negative about a celebrity is just as parasocial as being a stan.

I recently discovered snark subs because there was a YouTuber who I stumbled upon because she made a video about crocheting. And then I watched a few more of her videos and realized that was an outlier, most of them were just her going about her day and talking to the camera about stuff going on in her life. And I googled her thinking “wait is that it are people really interested in this?” And discovered there was a very active snark sub devoted to just complaining about her.

Like it was weird to me that people stan someone who just makes videos of themselves doing normal person things, but it was even weirder that there was a hate community obsessed with this person too

Exactly. People in glass houses. It is funny to me that someone who makes a living commenting on youtube about other people, gets on a high horse to judge others. We all snark.

I like some of his videos but I really disliked his take on Chappell Roan. He went out of his way to praise Taylor for endorsing Kamala, but criticized Chappell for her stance, when it's clear the democrats are too centrists and Palestine is a big issue for her and Kamala's plan for the situation is not in any way reassuring.

Snark subreddits are the worst.

Like, I know it seems critical from a gossip community but I've never seen one that doesn't devolve into insinuating that a woman is secretly a trafficked sex worker and that also therefore she's a Bad Person.

Every influencer snark page is the thinnest of reasons to hate.

idk if its the contrarian in me, but snark subs always have me ready to defend whoever the subject is! even if the person they're hating on is absolutely terrible, they get so nitpicky and petty it makes me want to argue with them lmao.
there's a very messy "foreigner in korea" influencer on tik tok that i'm familiar with just from being in the same foreigner facebook groups for years and she has SO many things to truly hate her for, but sometimes the things people come up with to hate her about on the snark pages are just so ridiculous!

a lot of the ones for women (which is most of them, weird 🤔) have this definite undercurrent of like…. pretending they’re here for the problematic things a person has done (which are sometimes very real!) but if you sniff around long enough you realize on some level these are people (often women themselves) who get incredibly angry at any woman who doesn’t adhere to the trappings of a “normal” adult life and who really think that completely harmless preferences in lifestyle are evidence of pathological immaturity or whatever. it’s a bummer.

also the million posts like “and also this bitch is ugly!” lol
