Was kinda curious about this now. According this article you can submit yourself up to 3 times for Best New Artist. Sabrina has only submitted twice.

The Recording Academy bases eligibility on when an artist “achieved a breakthrough into the public consciousness,” not on the number of releases they have had.

Carpenter has not been previously nominated for a Grammy, which generally results in disqualification from best new artist. And she has not been entered in the best new artist competition three times, which is an automatic disqualifier. Tate McRae has been entered three times (the last three years), so she is not eligible to be entered again. Carpenter has been entered twice - in 2017 and 2024, so she does not run afoul of that rule.

This makes no sense. It would be one thing if she was some indie artist who had been putting out music but no one knew who she was but she's been famous and putting out albums under a major label for over a decade.

Thank you lol. And for the record, I really like Sabrina. It's just that she has the hits, the sales and the acclaim to win every other major category so there's no need for her to team for her to try and squeeze her in this one lol

i really wish they would just rename this award so that this stops being a reason for discourse every year.

The eligibility criteria for the BNA category is stupid, but that's not Sabrina's fault so it's not "category fraud".

IIRC, you eligible as long you have recently had "breakthrough success" and have submitted for the BNA category less than 3 times. Tate McRae also blew up this year, but because she submitted herself 3 times already, she is not eligible.

They should just rename this category Breakthrough Artist.
