I’ve only been an alternate so I had to sit there the whole time but couldn’t deliberate 😠 I still don’t know what the jury decided but it was regarding a prisoner “assaulting” a guard. I put it in quotes because I personally saw it as self defense.

When they were picking jurors one woman said she loved Orange is the New Black and didn’t trust the judicial system so she wasn’t picked, if anyone is looking for an excuse to get out of it, maybe use that?

Nope! They deliberated for three days and the first day I, and the other two alternates, basically hung out in an empty courtroom and the other two days we just had to be within x amount of miles of the courthouse in case they needed one of us.

Not a jury duty story, buuuuuut

I met Toni Collette when she screened this movie to her friends and family a week ago? She was so so sweet and beautiful in person, omg.

i did jury duty a few years ago that was illuminating on how fucked up the state can be, the utter incompetent and rule breaking behaviors cops get away with, and how media really sensationalizes evidence. it also showed me that people caught up in emotions can fuck themselves over - if the defendant hadn't said one thing he'd have gotten off his charges entirely.

That’s how I felt about the case I sat on. I knew how broken the law enforcement and judicial systems were, but it didn’t prepare me for the reality of it all.

love Nicholas Hoult (and him doing an American accent always trips me out) but this looks depressing and bleak and not in a fun or arthouse way

I got called in for jury duty on a case involving grooming and statutory rape, but almost immediately got eliminated from the jury pool during voir dire. (The question was something along the lines of, "have you experienced CSA or know someone who has experienced CSA?" 😐) Nonetheless, the perp ended up convicted of his crimes.

That’s good the perp was found guilty regardless.

It’s interesting though because it seems that Australia does things differently regarding jury selection than the US. Here barristers can object before we finish walking to the jury box. They have basic information on jurors (I.e, gender, age, occupation, suburb they live etc) which they use to make decisions. Before the jury selection happens they read out all the people, places etc involved in the case so that potential jury members can speak to the judge about any conflicts etc. Individual jurors aren’t asked any questions. That being said, I’ve been in jury selections for sexual assaults where the defence barristers objected to certain female jurors and stacked the jury with a majority of males. So that still happens.
