I actually clicked on the video for once but I clicked out again when I saw it was 3:57. I’m not giving that much of my life to a comedy skit. Why do SNL skits always go on so long - it’s excruciating.

4 minutes is long? TikTok has really rotted the brains of people these days.
This is also why we have two minute long songs these days.

Don’t have TikTok. I’m old.

But yes, 4 minutes is long for a comedy sketch.

LMAO. Has anyone had such an embattled rise to fame in a big way as a musician since, like, Kurt Cobain?

It's wild bc Cat Power wrote "I Don't Blame You" about him and his struggles with fans, fame, his health, and addictions.

I wish (and she might too) that Chappell Roan had the level of fame that she did last year - where she was selling out mid-size venues and had a passionate but-not-as-gigantic fan base. I don't think this level of fame is feasible or healthy for any person.

It's interesting when people are like, "I understand what she/he/they meant, but they should've phrased it in this exact perfect way to make it clear", and it's like sure, in an ideal world yes, but do we actually want all our celebrities/famous people to be these word-perfect, PR robots? It feels like so many things are taken in bad faith, and it's already been said but media literacy is so dead.

Exactly. People are expecting her to react perfectly when this level of fame is unprecedented for her and she has admitted to struggling. She's such a fun, joyful performer and some are hell bent on crushing her spirit. Very nasty behavior.

Yep. Plus no one is thinking how it would feel if you've been a struggling musician for years, working away at it and all of a sudden blowing up so huge. Like, she didn't get the chance to gradually increase her audience size over time.

Some of this is clearly people projecting and unleashing their own anxieties related to world events. They need to direct this rage at politicians. The other portion is just plain old misogyny. Every pop girl has this kind of backlash, it's being speedrun with Chappell.

maybe it was his tone that came off as mocking, but it definitely did not feel kind and came off as mean spirited. and clearly a lot of people picked up on that.

Also fwiw Variety changed their headline from the one in Bowen's screenshot to "‘SNL’ Jokes About Chappell Roan Fan Harassment With Bowen Yang Dressed as Celebrity Hippo Moo Deng: ‘We Both Deserve Patience and Grace’"

But the internet is forever and we see you trying to stir the pot, Variety!

A lot of people picked up on what is called satire and mistook it as an attack.

I agree, but everything else was applicable to both Moo Deng and Chappell and was well-written satire. That endorsement line was just a weird non-sequitur and didn't match the vibe imo

Edit capcomvssnk : I thought your reply was to my previous comment, oop@me. Honestly in cases like this I blame the editors because I know authors have little control over their headlines. Variety was going for clicks and ragebait
