In a now deleted IG video, Jaclyn Hill jokes about Hurricane Helene and proceeds to give her hot take on hurricanes vs. earthquakes since she now lives in California.
Looks like people @'ed her anyways! It's not a fucking contest you weirdo. Both are really bad. I was in the Asheville subreddit and saw places that I lived by or used to visit and they're completely destroyed. A place called Chimney Rock was swept away. Do you see how that's also a bad thing? But go on about how you have it so much worse right now with your fake nails and your hair that's like omg so clean right now!!
Can someone smarter than me explain what happened in Asheville? Like I was surprised to learn it was so far from the shore.
Also what happened to all the towns/cities in between? Is this a case of waterways swelling because of Helene and Asheville didn't have the infrastructure?
Asheville is near a major river (French Broad) and it flooded. It’s is also a mountainous area so the floods and mudslides were swift. That area will likely be forever changed. A friend of mine is still searching for her brother after his entire home was washed away.
They were also in the hurting path and suffered damaging high winds along with the rain.
As a Floridian I probably would agree that maybe~ earthquakes are somewhat worse just cause (I'm assuming) they don't get warning ahead of time. At least with hurricane season here, we know coming into September it's the season and we'll be stocking up whether or not it becomes a problem. Some people have parties and some Publix even have the infamous hurricane party cake~ although I've never seen one!!
That said I probably wouldn't have said "eheheheh I left 6 months ago" at this time and place but youtubers who love backlash can't help themselves.
if you live in mexico city you get like a minute warning lol, in my city we don't have a seismic alert but i can tell you that being used to them you can kinda judge for yourself if the earthquake will be strong enough to leave the premises or if you can just ignore it and keep going with your life, esp bc 99% of the time by the time you've left your place the earthquake is over
idk as a native californian who still remembers the 89 world series earthquake, i'm not scared of quakes but maybe that's bc california has a lot of safety regulations to ensure buildings are equipped to withstand quakes. i guess if the big one comes that will be another story, but on a visceral level hurricanes and tornadoes scare me more. that said, my coworkers who were all east coast natives were all more scared of earthquakes, so i figured it mostly boils down to what you're used to lol.
I live in Charlotte. We were blessed because we just got bad rain and wind and some power outages. But Asheville NC (about 2 hours n west) got flooded so terribly and decimated.
I have a friend there and couldn’t even get in contact until today because cell towers are wiped out there.
Idk why we need to compare natural disasters because they all have the potential to decimate life
