I really don't know much about him besides he's been in everything, dad to Emma and brother to Julia. I didn't even know there was another sister.

I'm not going to read his book (so many more important ones to read first). I am enjoying the snippets.

I think he was dealing with addiction too, which doesn't help.
Not excusing what he did, it's just a lot was going on with him at the time.

Then don't father? I know that a lot of people have kids essentially because of inertia, social pressure, "it's just what you do." Maybe more people need to do a test run, offering to babysit a relative's kids at least overnight. That's maybe the closest you can get to auditioning for parenthood and discovering you don't have the temperament for it before it's too late.

Sounds like he was so wrapped up in the idea of being a father, that he forgot he also needed to be a parent. He probably imagined walking through a park with a kid in his shoulders, playing catch, etc.. then when the reality of diapers, feedings, crying, babies being babies hit, he couldn’t handle it.
