My first thought was less that he is actually suicidal and more that they're covering their asses just in case.

my first thought is that they're trying to prevent other inmates from getting to him cause sometimes they isolate famous/infamous people when they're first in prison and suicide watch would be one of the places they can do that. but yeah they're also likely legally covering them selves.
