His work has always been overly interested in salacious narratives and shock value, but atleast in the early days, it felt like he could also weave in genuine moments, like some of the stuff the characters were dealing with in "Popular" were very real and sincere issues and even as camp and over-the-line as that show got, it felt like it still respected the honesty of moments like a character getting treatment for an eating disorder or a kid struggling with his parent's divorce or a leukemia diagnosis or one of their teachers coming out as trans. And that was on network television in 1999! He's a freak and always has been. It's unfortunate he's responsible for a lot of our representation across the spectrum.

Glee is probably the most positive thing he's made, and even that was filled with a lot of BTS darkness and a weird derision for the very fans it was meant to benefit and comfort.

Glee also did not portray it's queer characters well.

It's crazy to think how impactful Glee really was, even for queer rep, cause God that show was a mess. But I remember how many queer folks felt safe and comfortable coming out because of it and seeing themselves represented, especially in characters mainly like Santana, Kurt and then Karofsky.

It's one of those pop culture milestones that I think really moved the needle in terms of societal acceptance, which is wild to say considering. Huge platform for queer rep. Not every show can say that, even ones that handled representation much (much much much) better.

the only ryan murphy thing i've ever watched (not knowing it was by him) was that hollywood show he did on netflix in ~2020. the first episode or two were entertaining and then it became unwatchable, i couldn't even finish it.

nah i think it was just called Hollywood. it was like a retcon or alternative universe of 1940s or 50s hollywood that was half-based on real people.
