Netflix really was waaaay behind the curve on this one. It's like they wanted to do a YA dystopian, but missed out on buying rights and had to wait for something popular yeeeeears ago to come back on the market and ended up with this. Could have been worse, though, we could have gotten like Matched or something.

wait i have another thought. there's this whole french concept called jolie laide, where the "flaw" makes a person even more beautiful. there are thousands of models who are unconventionally attractive in some way. they couldn't have tracked down a half dozen of them? or simply find some people who are beautiful but not conventionally beautiful based on narrow eurocentric standards? i feel like that would have made the concept of this show much more meaningful. surely some of them are as talented as the young people in this movie who might not even be very good based on the trailer for this mishegas.
