So, the whole video game industry is going through a huge strike with SAG because of offering zero AI protections and of course, totally and utterly refusing to pay anything even slightly reasonable to voice actors and then....they try to also not pay people anything even in the REALM of what is reasonable for a music BUYOUT? The stupidity is not surprising but it's still astounding.
Anytime someone complains about music, movies, etc not being as good anymore (which I'd argue there's still lots of great stuff, it's just less mainstream) I point to these kinds of moments. You have to be able to make money in the arts just like any other job and all fractions of the creative world have been taken over by shits who CAN'T make the products yet think they don't have to pay the people who can. It's obliterating all artistic industries (at least in the states) and I'm glad artists are getting bolder and speaking out! If none of these companies will pay anyone, there's not exactly a lot to lose anyway by getting blackballed.
This reminds me of a woman on TikTok who posted recently about how American Idol offered her husband *$500* for use of his most popular song for auditions and performances, as well as promo on like 3 different morning shows, for both worldwide & streaming, for about 3 years. Big yikes on both parts.
crazy all the different kinds of deals that you can make regarding this stuff. a royalty buyout from a game that's basically guaranteed to be a massive success is ridiculous. especially when you take into account the fact that online gaming is going to extend the life and money-making potential of this game in particular.
Rockstar is just a trash company in general, this does not surprise me trying to be cheap fucks.
In related news, Remedy either couldn't renew the rights to have Space Oddity in Alan Wake/Alan Wake Remastered (this isn't the first song they've lost rights to for that game, either) or couldn't afford to renew it and they issued updates this week to a 14-year-old game to replace it with an original song made in house. I wish I knew more about the intricacies about how games are different than TV/movies and streaming and how artists/copyright holders normally get paid.
Oh yeah, Netflix is especially bad about this. They offer no one royalties. Period. I'm including HUGE stars and producers. You take their low level buyout or you don't work with them. And lots are choosing not to work with them now and well... you can see it in the quality of their material these days. Good for her saying no, once you take that offer when you're new, it's nearly impossible to ever get treated better.
Ugh, sorry you're getting paid peanuts for your writing, the whole entertainment industry truly is a mess right now.
