I think modal cotton is made out of beech tree fibre or something. It's been used for more affordable clothing and bedding, like the mass-produced kind you can buy in Target, and Bed, Bath & Beyond, and similar big box stores.

Aghast? I never stopped laying tank tops visibly under t-shirts. I literally did that today. Sometimes I layer a long-sleeved shirt under a t-shirt as a little treat. I'll layer a tank over a tank, I do not give a fuck. I refuse to move on.
