Why is there no law to prevent owners from putting down pets for no good reason?

That should be a thing. It feels like we say dogs are man’s best friend, but we don’t often live up to that saying.

Years ago I was waiting to be interviewed for a job at a vet's office, and overheard this woman talking on the phone, explaining nonchalantly that she was having her dog put down because "it's breath smells." I did not get the job (a front desk position) and was glad, because dealing with horrible people like that would make me lose my composure, to say the least.

I already knew by then that vets can and will refuse to euthanize healthy pets. My vet at that time had adopted a client's dog to spare their life. I just don't know how they refrain from punching these people....
