It’s kinda wild hearing Julia’s southern accent though!! I remember being surprised when I found out she’s originally from Georgia! Cause I kept thinking it was weird she didn’t have one but I guess she’s lost it over the years cause all her older interviews it’s def there.
She's definitely from here lol, I remember my brother's best friend's mom was apparently friends with her growing up, but she ditched everyone when she started getting famous (very guy on a bike, I know, but this is a common story with her).
Julia hasn't always earned her sweetheart reputation but this is a very thoughtful response, and captures some of the nuance of the situation. I feel like actors and directors who take on these kinds of projects really need to do some studying beforehand because there's a lot of ignorance on the topic of domestic violence and they can either face it head on or contribute further to it.
Yep it is. I used to be obsessed with this movie but part of me now looks back and thinks it’s because what I would’ve want my mom to have done to escape my dad but she never did. Kinda fucked up I know but it was comforting if only for a minute of what life would be like if she wouldn’t have stayed and have us.
Props to Julia. This whole think made me remember that Nicole Kidman was also super respectful and thoughtful when talking about her character in Big Little Lies. Maybe some clips will appear eventually.
These types of shows ARE actually important. My friend's mom was the type of person who victim blamed and said "well, it's her fault for staying", and after watching BLL my friend told me that it helped her mom changed her perspective. She realized how complicated being in a situation like that can be. And having empathy for the characters on screen was really all it took. So it's even more important that the actors/directors/producers used the promotion to amplify the message.
Really goes to show Blake doesn't care at all about the subject. She just attached herself to a popular book for her image and her businesses.
I love my mom to death but she is very much one of those “why didn’t she just leave??” types every time we watch forensic files or something similar and I have to go through it again with her “do you think she liked being terrorized and abused? do you think she wanted to be murdered? Did she deserve it?” And the answers are always no, of course not, but the cycle starts back over the next time she sees it. I just keep telling her she’s lucky she doesn’t know what it’s like to go through that manipulation from a partner and she agrees but she still just can’t get there as a 73 year old lady. maybe I should tell her to watch BLL lol
BLL is probably the one piece of media that truly captured the feeling of living with an abusive person. I remember I would feel physically ill watching scenes with Skarsgard and Nicole Kidman's characters but I think it was that honesty that made it land emotionally with people who might not have the same experiences so I'm glad to hear your friend's mother was able to empathize and change her perspective.
