Lively has a tendency toward deadpan humor, often delivered with a laconic stare that can make it difficult to figure out whether she is joking or not. “When I say something funny, I don’t laugh,” she says, “so my friends are always like, ‘Hahahahaaaa!’ so people know. When I’m not with them, I always think, This person doesn’t know I’m funny; they just think I’m a jerk.”

Pro tip: If your friends have to say “hahahahaaaa” to let other people know you’re making a joke, maybe it’s not funny? Like this rather mean joke about a not-nice restaurant.

She stares at me with a look that says, Really? It came highly recommended, I say. “By whom,” she asks, “someone who hates us?” It takes a second for me to get that she’s kidding (I think). A waiter approaches us to ask if we’d like to start with something to drink. “Can I have the French onion soup to drink?” says Lively. “I’m sorry?” says the waiter. “See what happens?” Lively says to me. “You have to be my laugh track.”

she has the same sense of humour as me but i also realized before i left HS that people only like it when you insult yourself AND deadpan jokes only work if there's wit to them

like with the waiter she should've just said "yes i'd like something to drink" and sat there lmfao

Same. I have a very dry, rude-ish humour but you learn early on if you have a brain in your head who and what you should be directing your jabs at to avoid hurting people (self deprecating humour is my second language at this point lol)

i mean that's not the problem with the waiter. the problem with the waiter is that the waiter is working within a context where customers can genuinely be assholes, and it's very obvious that a deadpan joke like that (and your edit joke frankly) has a high chance of landing badly. if you're going to joke with a waiter/stranger, it's got to be obvious or you're going to be a bad part of their day.

Hahaha yesss please keep digging up these past receipts of Blake being a jerkoff.

Also Leighton was always the superior Gossip Girl with the voice of an angel. I still love that Country Strong soundtrack.

Genuinely cannot imagine how they talk to each other when they're at home in private, both in "off" mode. Maybe they just sit in silence? Communicate through gestures?

I've wondered what they're children must be like with parents like them. 3 girls under the age of 10 😬

with her bizarre sense of humor and random bouts of rudeness, blake lively is like the IRL version of the famous person from the electrical infetterance meme

Her humor just doesn't land. There was another interview when she said that people just don't get her humor.. and I'm like, well... shouldn't that be a sign? lol.
