Joaquin Phoenix, who co-developed the idea for an untitled gay detective film with director Todd Haynes (Carol) and writer Jon Raymond, dropped out of the project at the last minute. Sets were already constructed, and filming was set to begin five days later. He allegedly got "cold feet", but since the project hinged on his casting, seven figures had already been spent on prepping the film, and it has now been cancelled altogether. Top Gun: Maverick star Danny Ramirez was set to costar in the film, said to be featuring scenes of an NC-17 nature. Some speculate that these scenes were the reason Phoenix got cold feet; however, other sources said that much of that content was Phoenix's idea.

Phoenix will next be seen in the Joker sequel.
