I am SO curious about this. I can only guess she was trying for Mal? And that would have made for an interesting symmetry with her and Sarah Jeffrey's Audrey but if I had to guess I would say that maybe they didn't want to add the element of race to this 'children of people living on a prison garbage dump get the opportunity to not be their criminal parents' movie in the way casting a very visible obviously black woman would have went. The main cast was diverse (Sofia is Latina, Cameron is half black, Booboo is several cultures) but none of them are one visible ethnicity, if that makes sense.
