We had some obnoxious bar/ restaurant here in town say they aren't going to show the Olympics because they don't want to offend people over the opening ceremony. Owner is an idiot. Some other bar copied the format of the post to say that they would allow the Olympics, because the Olympics are fun.

Anyway, I think if any of these people saw the painting this was actually inspired by then they'd be complaining about satanic people with goat feet so they weren't going to win with the evangelical crowd who always want to be offended about something.

That segment wasn't even actually based on the last supper anyway, it was based on a Dutch painting of Greek Gods called The Feast of the Gods by Jan van Bijlert.

Even the creative director of the Opening Olympics admitted this: Thomas Jolly, denied the scene, titled “Festivity”, was based on the painting (The Last Supper). “That wasn’t my inspiration,” he told BFM TV. “I think it was pretty clear. There’s Dionysus who arrives at the table … Why is he there? Because he’s the god of feasting, of wine, and the father of Sequana, the goddess of the River Seine.”

It’s genuinely scary being online. For example, the reactions on twitter to the Southport* stabbings have continued the trend of brazen and open bigotry. It’s all allowed at this point. You can’t be brown at a protest with a coconut placard, but you can have a far right riot not be called one.

The way these huge accouns whip up right wing frenzy is really frightening. I've been pretty frustrated with how any attempt to discuss this is getting shut down with "oh so you're saying the UK isn't racist? that it's the internet's fault? lolol" like... no. Obviously not. Horrendous racism is practically England's national sport but let's not pretend these accounts spreading disinformation to the masses within seconds of a tragedy occurring have no impact.

I can't believe the gall of those people who were pointing to the Leeds riot just a few days ago and claiming that white Brits would never act that way, but who then cheered on a white EDL mob throwing bricks through mosque windows (for NO fucking reason) and setting fire to police vans. Or how the other day it was fine for a cop to stamp on a restrained person's head in retribution but yesterday they were all paedos who should be thrown in jail.
