He cited the movie "IF" as a film that "resonated strongly" with moviegoers in the heartland.

According to Wikipedia the budget was 110 million & it made 186.3 million.
I'm not sure if the "3 times the budget to be successful" thing still applies, but it would need to make 330 million for that. If it's only 2 times the budget, it would be 220.

Cause they're in the same boat as anti-vaxxers and flat-earth truthers. It's all forced woke made-up liberal hollywood agenda to them.

I remember when they started foaming at the movie over that movie with Betty Gilpin, the Hunt(?). Crying that it was left wing propaganda about how republicans would hunt people for sport. Then when the movie came out, they all of a sudden went silent. Because it was really a movie giving a critique on online culture, where we forget that the person on the other end of the screen is a person too, and how people can be radicalized with just a few mouse clicks.

people were expecting it to be a big award player and do well at the box office since it is a familiar IP

and then pretty much no one watched it, the box office numbers were terrible and it really struggeled that award season

The movie was hounded with negative rumors and iirc people hated Oprah during its run. Surely that didn’t help
