I don't think anything will ever be as good as the movies for me, but I'll still watch. I am wondering if I should try to re-watch Season 1 after the Olympics though because I feel like I watched it so long ago.
Honestly the movies were just such a MOMENT unto themselves, idk that that could ever be recaptured, the stars just aligned perfectly. I do have more gripes with them as time goes on, they certainly made some dumb decisions at times, but the love and care that went into them is just so palpable, from everyone involved.
They also hold up really great 20+ years better and are better than some of what they're doing now tbh. They did such a fantastic job with them. You can also see the Battle of Helm's Deep, it isn't too dark unlike more recently filmed night battles.
I have The Silmarillion but I've never made it through the book because it's just so hard for me to get through and keep track of everything. I know some basics, but I just don't feel like I know the backstory as well as I should - it's just so dense & I know the show is doing it's own thing and not really adapting it.
FOTR is absolute peak cinema, i think ROTK does start to show some of the tendencies that i don't enjoy abt stuff like the hobbit films, but it's still an excellent film. i love the films a ton, grew up on them and all. i just wish that ppl would acknowledge just how much they change around book material in ways that isn't rly necessary, like denethor f.ex., who's such a straight up villain in the films. it works perfectly within the movie, so i'm not mad. but the hateful energy ppl bring for ROP makes me sad when there's plenty of changes in the trilogy, and those are fine too

Huh, looks like they switched the focus away from the hobbits and the cringe worthy romance, and placed Galadriel front and center. Elrond also seems like he's transitioning from a frat boy to a more mature era, so maybe there's still some hope left for the show.
Honestly, both of Elrond's friendships were a really high point for me in S1. I'm definitely invested in the Elrond-Galadriel friendship, so I'm glad we got a moment or two of it in the trailer.
agreed! rob aramayo brings a very sweet, friendly quality to the role and both galadriel's and durin's actors match him well, i am invested in both very much. and disa! i'm hoping that we get gil-galad developed further, he's so stern and dour, i hope we see a softer side to him too.
