I think sometimes people confuse romantic attention with the attention of being cared for. I can't really fault anyone, because I think both are human needs, but I think it's easy to find comfort in one and assume it is both. I think that's why asymmetrical relationships exist because it can go both ways for both people. I know nothing about either of these two people. On the other hand, sometimes it's just straight up for money and the one who has it is happy to feel flattered. I think on some level they know it's superficial but at that point don't really care.
