I’m shocked to discover that they bothered to audition other people for Sam Seaborn. At that point in the process, the show was basically a Rob Lowe vehicle.

Jon would have been a terrible Sam and Rob would have been an ever worse Don.

Exactly. The show was originally going to be centered AROUND Sam, and the president was going to be totally offscreen (bad ideas!)
And Rob Lowe's disappointment at being one of a big ensemble lead to him quitting. RIP Sam & Josh best bros.
