Off with Their Heads! Celebrities Face A Reckoning

Jun 14, 2024 02:53

In recent weeks unlucky stars - be they singers, actors or amorphous 'influencers' - have been hauled on to the chopping 'block of the day' and metaphorically executed before a cheering online mob. Echoes of the bloody French Revolution are entirely intentional.

How celebrities like Taylor Swift and even Oprah Winfrey are being send to the ' ( Read more... )

i think the priority should be people who flood their social media with "political causes" and calls to action about completely useless things, or even are selective in favour of oppressors. that's the only real nuance i have for this. celebrities are completely useless and pointless. i've divested from them as anything but whatever their job is and it's been great (as much as my friends think it's pretentious lol).

You are right that most celebrities are stupid, but they don't get to use social media to have one-way conversations with the public, people are going to talk back. If they don't like what people are saying, they can log off. Knowing many of these celebs can and do call up politicians when they want a favor is part of why I'm fine with them being publicly pressured.

Wish this was posted a bit while ago for some reason but yeah I appreciate this post even more now. Wish the digitine is rather more effective in terms of permanence. This definitely cuts deep as other Tiktokers/influencers are getting dragged thru filth right and left, and some nobody on Tiktok got really mad about people like us caring more about Gaza than them.

In fact on this matter, Swift deserves getting dragged for not speaking out on Palestine and the others but took her time to speak on Lady Gaga’s private personal and health issues. It’s blatantly so clear where she stands even with IWD (international women’s day) while ignoring WOCs, Gaza and the entire world etc.

Lol I was about to edit but yea if that’s insufficient for proof of evidence right there then idk what else is! other than the blatant obviousness of her weaponized ignorance and all-white feminism! She was just out on stage wiping her snot off, basically winked and blew a kiss. People ate it up. So I don’t think she’d legitimately give two fucks either, even off the camera. It’d be too little too late if she ever backtrack on it if she be 🤑

This isn't an influencer thing (although I know several authors for example who are subject to this so it's related), but at least in the state of NC if we say ANYTHING with our name attached to it that is anti-Israel, we can be fired from our jobs. Thanks, NC Republicans! And I have heard about people being brought for disciplinary action over this sort of stuff, especially in the public universities.

I guess I think why not weaponize your celebrity if you have the clout to to at least put up a donation link to a trusted charity. It's like I don't think less of a person, dumbass or otherwise, who stays quiet but I do have higher esteem for the people who say something encouraging people to stop.

I'm of two minds about this, because just because someone isn't talking about something on their social media doesn't mean they aren't doing something behind the scenes, or helping out in more tangible ways. I'm thinking about all the people who were rushing to cook Amal Clooney online for "saying nothing" while the good sis was doing a lot backstage.

I never understood the pressure on her specifically. The lawyers I know in my extended circle have been under a lot of pressure to say things, even though publicly stating a political position (or one that can be interpreted as being political) can limit the work they are subsequently able to engage in, and not just because other lawyers will/won't work with them on the basis of what they've said. What you say as a lawyer can be weaponized not only against you but your clients and the people you represent. Just because some lawyers are in a position to speak out and use their position doesn't mean it should be an expectation, and she has always been a lawyer first, celebrity/celeb-adjacent second. (Not sure which she actually is, to be honest.)

I think people here specifically singled her out because she's Lebanese so automatically it should be a no-brainer which side she should be on and were expecting an immediate declaration. This is the expectation for any arab or arab-descendant celeb cause I saw similar expectation for Shakira (she hasn't said anything either 👀).

But I agree with you she's a lawyer, she has to follow a certain code and ethics like anyone in those type of jobs.

"and she has always been a lawyer first, celebrity/celeb-adjacent second. (Not sure which she actually is, to be honest.)"

She's more a lawyer than celeb cause it's not like she's constantly out in the public eye when she's not lawyering.
